Kylian Mbappe scored twice — the second an 87th-minute winner into an empty net — as Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 at Camp Nou on Sunday to end the La Liga leaders' perfect start to the season and cut the gap at the top to three points.
Barcelona had won their first nine league games and kicked off knowing a tenth straight victory would have made them the first side in Europe's top five leagues ever to start a season that way. Instead, as Reuters reported, Madrid became the first team to beat Hansi Flick's side in La Liga this season, following up the 1-0 advantage they held at half-time with a classic late sucker punch.
A lucky opener, then a game of missed chances
Mbappe's first goal, on 41 minutes, owed everything to fortune. Yan Diomande — one of Madrid's brightest sparks all evening — was slipped into the area by Marc Cucurella and his low centre was blasted by Gerard Martin straight off Mbappe and into the net from close range. The Frenchman knew little about it, but Madrid's counter-attacking plan had its reward.
Barcelona should have levelled almost immediately, only for Lamine Yamal to scuff an uncharacteristically poor finish wide, and Madrid twice went close to a second before the break: Mbappe rifled one effort against the inside of the post before the offside flag spared Barcelona, and Diomande broke in behind to hit the side netting. At the other end, Andriy Lunin — starting in place of the ill Thibaut Courtois — had already denied Anthony Gordon at his near post, and he produced a terrific one-handed save to keep out Martin's header early in the second half.
Raphinha levels — then Bellingham and Camavinga steal it
Barcelona's pressure told on 61 minutes. A quick, short corner routine found Pedri in space, and his pass picked out Raphinha in the box; the captain's shot was too hot for Lunin to handle and nestled in the corner for his 13th league goal of the season. Camp Nou roared, Flick's substitutes warmed up, and for twenty minutes the momentum was all with the hosts.
Then came the move of the match. With three minutes left, Jude Bellingham — outstanding throughout — skipped away from his man and released substitute Eduardo Camavinga, on since the 80th minute, down the right. Camavinga held off Pau Cubarsi and laid the ball across for Mbappe to slot into an open goal, sparking wild celebrations and a Jose Mourinho knee slide on the touchline. Opta noted that the brace takes Mbappe to five goals in two visits to Barcelona as a Madrid player — the most by any Madrid player in this fixture since 2013-14, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema — and to 11 league goals for the season. Yamal, by contrast, finished with five shots worth 0.51 expected goals and not a single chance created.
So what? The title race is alive again
The table now reads very differently from the one that loomed at kick-off. Barcelona stay top on 27 points from ten games, but Atletico Madrid's win on Saturday leaves them just a point behind in second, and Madrid are third on 24 — three points back, not the nine-point chasm a home win would have opened. Mourinho's unbeaten run in Clasicos now stands at six matches (four wins, two draws), and his side have shown the rest of La Liga the template for beating Barcelona: defend compactly, survive Lunin's big moments, and strike late on the break.
There is one more duel to settle within 24 hours. Mbappe and Yamal are the two favourites at tomorrow's Ballon d'Or ceremony in London — the case was set out in Beyond The Final Whistle's Ballon d'Or preview — and while the voting closed long ago, only one of them made a statement on the biggest club stage on the eve of the ceremony.
Beyond the Final Whistle: This was Mourinho football executed to perfection — no panic at 1-1, no gung-ho chase, just patience and one devastating break finished by the best big-game forward in the world right now. Barcelona remain top and remain favourites, but their aura of invincibility is gone, and Madrid believe again. Did Mourinho outcoach Flick, or did Barcelona simply waste the chances to kill this game off?
