Atletico Madrid have told Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain that Julian Alvarez will not be leaving in January, closing the door on one of the winter window's most talked-about moves before it has even opened.
The decision, reported by TEAMtalk, has been communicated to both clubs and to the player himself. Alvarez will not be allowed to leave during the current season, however strong the interest from north London or Paris becomes in the coming weeks.
It is a firm line from the Metropolitano, and it ends, for now, a saga that ran through the whole summer. Arsenal spent months monitoring the Argentine's situation, held talks in London with Gunners chief Andrea Berta, and stayed in touch with his representatives after the window closed in the hope that January might bring a change of heart.
Why Alvarez wanted out, and why the door stayed shut
Alvarez made little secret in the summer that he wanted to join Barcelona. Atletico were just as clear that they would never sanction a sale to their Catalan rivals, and that stance has not softened. A move to Arsenal was a consideration, according to the reporting, but the forward did not push for it during the summer window.
Since then the picture has shifted. Alvarez has been reintegrated into Diego Simeone's side and has started scoring again, finding the net in the Champions League meeting with Stuttgart and again in La Liga at the weekend, when his goal settled the game against Deportivo. Football365, reporting the same TEAMtalk line, puts his season so far at two goals and two assists in nine matches in all competitions.
Just as important has been the public repair job. Alvarez apologised to Atletico supporters for his words during the World Cup, telling Movistar it was a mistake in how he expressed himself and in the timing, and that it was now time to get to work and give everything he has got.
Simeone has his striker back
Simeone, who has been a driving force behind the decision to keep Alvarez, welcomed the apology in terms that leave little doubt about where the player now stands in his plans.
"I really appreciate his apology. Doing so is not easy, but when someone speaks from the heart, from pure emotion, I value it immensely because he is a humble, hardworking player and person," Simeone said. "If the club wants to reach the heights the fans dream of, we need Julian Alvarez to be at his best."
That is not the language of a manager preparing to lose his centre-forward in January. It is the language of a rebuild around him, and Atletico's message to Arsenal, PSG and the player matches it word for word.
So what happens next
For Arsenal, the search for attacking reinforcements now has to go in a different direction, at least until the summer. The reporting also links the decision to Viktor Gyokeres: any thought of moving the Swedish striker on in January looks far less likely while the Alvarez route is closed, because there is no ready-made replacement of the same level available mid-season.
For PSG, the answer is the same. The French champions have held a longstanding interest, but the suggestion that Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's season-ending injury might force them into the market was always, on this reporting, wide of the mark. Luis Enrique is not looking for a short-term stand-in, and in any case Atletico were never going to sell.
For Alvarez himself, the next few months are now simple, if not easy. He has apologised, he is scoring, and his manager has publicly backed him. What he does between now and May will decide whether the summer brings a fresh fight for his signature or whether Madrid becomes, at last, the home he keeps saying sorry to.
Beyond the Final Whistle: Atletico have done the smart thing here, and Arsenal should read it as a favour. A January deal for a reluctant seller's star striker was always going to cost a fortune and arrive with baggage. The real test now is Alvarez himself: one apology and two goals do not mend a summer of wanting Barcelona. If he is still drifting by spring, this story starts again, only louder.
